Carat £140

The Carat follows the style of the Topas in the Space kites range. Low aspect ratio, short tail and lots of fabric. The carat is aimed at pairs and teams, as well as being an all-round big wing freestyler.

It is available in a standard, a pro comp and a vented form, and is 2.2m x 1.25m. As with all space kites the carat has high quality of construction (p31 and top notch fittings) and the 3-point bridle has a knot adjustment system that allows you to adjust the bridle between precision and more freestyle abilities.

With the bridle set for freestyle in a light wind the kite takes some getting used to. The pull is positive a corners/tracking good. Once got into I found axles, half axles and cascades no problem - although you have to fly "two handed" - none of this yank the lines to see what happens. The kite loves to rising fade, and a couple of tugs when it's on its back nose towards you cause it to lift off the ground and elevate. On its back the kite seems unstable, although removing the trick makes lazy susan combos easy.

The Carat is mesmerising once tuned into. It may not be a trick monster, but the satisfaction one gets from performing with this kite is worth the effort.
