The Prism Flashlight is the latest ultra light freestyle kite from the hand of Mark Reed. Framed in a range of carbon tube from 4mm upwards however, the flashlight costs a smidgen under £100 as a complete package with sport lines, straps and the excellent prism CD containing tips, training and other details.
The icarex sail is a deep "prism shaped" affair, with a wingspan of around 6ft. the kite is considerably deeper than the ozone, and comes in a top quality bag. Everything about the kite oozes quality.
In flight the flashlight drives well even approaching 0 wind conditions, although it is not aimed as an indoor kite. The kite has a considerable amount of float enabling smooth 540's and 960's as well as helicopters form the top to the bottom of the window. The reverse dynamic bridle gives the kite stability in a fade, which can be held centre window, or even elevated from a fade launch. Having no trick line Lazy susans only require a gentle touch, and overall wing and tail wraps are uncommon despite the longish bridle.
Cascades and Fountains cant be popped, but have to be "moved" with sweeping movements, at all points the kite maintains great presence in the sky with minimum effort. More advanced tricks like backspins are available for those who are willing to practice rather than yank and hope.
The biggest problem with the flashlight is where it fits in the prism range. Having flown it back to back with the ozone although the ozone is crisper and fade locks better overall I prefer the flashlight. Maybe I could keep this one and reframe it in something a little exotic!
As it is the Flashlight is a great bargain ultralight.
