Hornet - £100

Big wings, it would appear, are back in fashion and the 2400mm Hornet seems to prove the point. You are getting a lot for kite for your money, including P200 style frame and a Torray Polyester sale. You are also getting a kite designed by Vince Chen, the guy who created the Beetle.

Construction quality is fairly typical for Flying Wings kites, at the upper end of the "made in the east" brigade. The sail is very deep, helped by the T-Piece being a Dihedral; now I took one look at this and thought "snap". I trust they have thoroughly tested it!

The kite has a great deal of adjustability, the aspect ratio can be altered by shifting the lower cross spreaders (a clever system of clips allows this) and the bridle has 3 legs to the leading edge and an active leg, which on the kite I flew was slack whatever position the bridle was in.

I flew the Hornet on 90ft lines in a good breeze. In "Standard" mode it tracked well and did basic precision. Tricks were somewhat harder to come by, the kite has no trick line and fails to recover well if on its back, which seems a favorite position for it after a failed move. Change the aspect ratio and the kite livens up somewhat. Cascades are just possible, standard axles, fades, fade take off's and 540's are there if the kite is tending though the move. No pop and hope with this baby. I found the Hornet pulled way to much for my tastes, but would make an able trick kite in 2-5mph of wind with a decent "w" style trickline.

The Hornet is great value, and performs well, even though it lacks the design and construction polish of European and American kites. If it gets more people flying big kites then I hope it sells well.
