StingRay £40

The Premier Stingray is supplied with a low stretch line set, straps and winder in a nylon bag. The lines are a spectra blend rather than full spectra, although the kite is available with a Spectra line set.

The kite itself is made of a heavy ripstop nylon and the quality of sewing is neat but not up to European standards. However the stitching is safe enough and matches that of other kites produced in the far east.

The frame is 4 mm carbon with 1 mm outer stand-offs. Rather than inner stand-offs the sail is tensioned with a bungee running behind the tail. This bungee keeps the trailing edge taut like a leach line.

The kite flies from about 5 mph - better lines lower this range. In flight the Stingray is smooth and controllable.

Moving to tricks the kite is quite impressive. Axels are easy although not always flat, although flat axles are very attractive when they do happen. Fades are available from axles or from belly outs. These can be held or popped into a flick flacks. On the ground the kite is highly recoverable although attempts at belly launches tend to pull the standoffs out rather than launching the kite, coin tosses and spin take offs are easy enough.

The Stingray is a fun kite for beginners with stuff there for the experts; Which is hardly surprising, being a product of Premier's long partnership with top American designer John Trennepohl. There are few other 1.5m kites that can match the Stingray's value and performance.
