Print Kite magazines are some what thin on the ground these days. A combination of factors have led to the collapse or refocusing of publications that might cover freestyle and sport kiting.
The American Kitefliers Association has done their best to fill this gap with Kiting, a 50 page glossy magazine with a full color cover and 4 full color main pages.
Content covers the full range of kite flying, the issue I have in front of me - spring 2002 - has kite surfing, indoor kiting and single line flying. Amongst the information of international interest there is also much that is US specific which may only be of curiosity value to an overseas reader.
The editorial work by Mike Gillard is well done and the photography is generally excellent. It is a shame that the whole magazine is not in color - I would love some of the snaps of the indoor flying to show freestyle skeptics!
So what does it cost? International AKA membership is about $40. AKA Kiting comes out 4 times a year, that makes each issue over £6. Ouch! Of course there are the other benefits of AKA membership - frequent visitors to the US may appreciate the insurance if they choose to kite fly when away, and you can attend the annual AKA convention - if you can afford the airfare (donations accepted)!
Overall AKA Kiting is a good magazine and its a shame its not more available in the UK.
