kHiTe catches up with Carl, James, Andy, Brian and Helen to ask them how
they found the flying techniques video. Well actually we emailed them and
Andy didn't get back to us.
kHiTe: What's your favorite moment of Flying Techniques Video?
Carl:
Flying pairs with James at Middle Wallop, and watching it when it was
finished. The kites sound like Tie Fighters. |
Brian:
The Easter egg / out takes. That part was completed in January and I've
watched it many, many times. When things were getting too much for me
with the video I would put this on and every time I would come away with
a big smile on my face and remember why it was all worth it. Easter egg
... Oops ... I've not let the cat out of the bag have I ... I'm sure people
will have fun finding it for themselves ... |
Helen:
Definitely the out-takes! Makes me giggle every time. My favorite part
of the main video is the fantastic sequence where James executes multiple
pull-downs of the Rev - blinding!! |
James:
Flying ballet routines with Carl at Middle Wallop with no calls, no music,
no audience and no worries, just blue sky, smooth wind, oh, and some bloke
saying "just once more please guys". Watching Carl forget what
last came out of his mouth ... hee hee! |
Andy:
... |
kHiTe: What was the hardest moment of filming for you?
Carl:
Trying to remember what I was saying when I was saying it! |
Brian:
August Middle Wallop because of the heat. Sweat was pouring off my face
and into the camera and yet I still had to keep filming Andy setting up
his lines because it was a good take. |
Helen:
Having to act as 'producer' and keep my eyes and ears open for problems
that might affect the filming, e.g. background music and distractions,
or shadows in the wrong place. Holding 'Rover' (the big fluffy microphone)
at Brighton for 40 minutes was a bit of a killer! |
James:
Trying to get 'pull downs' to work with the Revolution - I didn't have
the kite set up to do it in the conditions and I was getting really pissed
off with it not working ... fortunately, Brian turned it round and cut
together loads of the failed attempts without actually showing how crap
and off target most of them actually were ... isn't editing just wonderful?! |
Andy:
... |
kHiTe: What did you learn from making the Video?
Carl:
That Andy likes cake! (lots of it - especially if it tastes funny!) |
Brian:
Bridle adjustments - I'd never tampered with bridles before watching Flying
Techniques. Tip stands, getting into fades, flic flac, clock maneuver
(rev), how the flic flac on the rev is done, how to choose a piece of
music for a routine and how to fit maneuvers to it. I also learnt that
a video project which on first sight looks like only taking 6 months could
actually take 14 months ... |
Helen:
Lots of useful tips that I can use when flying my Rev, and useful two
line stuff like tip stands, landings and tricks, which will get me back
into flying two-line this year, definitely! |
James:
How, in really hot weather, having hair stops the sweat from rolling into
your eyes ... (ask Brian) and How Andy likes single cream (wind) to go
with his cake. |
Andy:
